Winter Getaway: Treat The Skin You're In

The best way to make the most of the cold weather is to plan the ultimate winter getaway, whether it's to the snowy slopes to work on your skiing game by day and cozy up to the fireplace in an old log cabin by night or to the white sands and crystal clear waters of your favorite exotic island you need to follow a few steps to get your skin pampered and ready. So before you embark on your new adventure, pamper your skin with these 3 easy steps.

Banish Dead Cells

Exfoliation should be an important part of your skincare routine all year around, but it is especially important in the winter. Dead skin cells lower the amount of moisturizing products that your skin is able to absorb, thereby leading to dryness, flaking and irritation.

A quick facial and body scrub will also make you feel refreshed, renewed and rejuvenated. There are some great products available at drugstores but we recommend making your own exfoliator with coconut oil (olive oil and grape seed oil work really well too), lemon juice and unrefined sugar. Once you have mixed all of the ingredients, apply the scrub to your face and body in gentle circular motions. Rinse it off with luke warm water and say hello to luscious skin like never before! You should repeat this ritual once a week for soft skin throughout the season.

Moisturize to the Max

Just like exfoliation, moisturizing should be an essential part of your skincare routine, all day and every day. Winter is the time to up your moisturizing game because your skin needs all of the hydration that it can get (and more!), even if you have oily skin. Exfoliation increases the absorption of moisturizer by your skin so make sure that you have checked that box before moving on to this one.

The most effective time to apply moisturizer is when your skin is slightly damp after a shower - this locks in the moisturize and maximizes the benefits that your skin derives from the super beauty product. Moisturizing twice a day is an absolute must during the winter and will have your skin looking supple throughout your vacation. At night, use an oil-based cream for deep nourishment while you sleep. Alternatively, you can apply olive oil to your body and wake up to drastically softer skin! Do not forget to pay special attention to your hands and feet, taking care to rub the oil into your cuticles and heels.

So, which brand should you stick with? Ideally, go with a product that contains glyceryl glucoside, a compound that improves the water channels below your skin and helps the moisture penetrate to the deepest layers.

Soothe Your Scalp

One of the most annoying symptoms that winter has finally arrived is an itchy and flaky scalp. Fear not, ladies! This is a very common predicament when the weather cools down and you are not alone in your battle to rid your scalp of pesky dandruff. Switch to a shampoo that contains salicylic acid for quick and efficient results. You can also try some nifty home remedies which work wonders for dandruff-ridden tresses. In a bowl, whisk together three tablespoons ofyogurtwith the juice of half a lemon for ten seconds and then apply this mixture to your scalp. Let it set for ten minutes and then wash your hair as normal. Repeat this remedy twice a week and bid adieu to the dandruff within a couple of weeks; a great trick to banish the problem before your upcoming getaway! Vinegar is also highly effective because it eliminates the dead skin cells on the scalp, thereby attacking the root cause of dandruff; however, you should not use it more than once in a month.

If your tresses tend to look dry, dull and lifeless during winter, a couple of hot oil treatments before your getaway will do the trick, making your hair look healthy, shiny and strong.

If you aren't already eating a healthy diet then here's another reason why you should, you can eat your way to fabulous skin! We'll tell you how in this beauty article.

Have a blast, ladies!
