Last night, we were doing what you, our next door neighbor and the rest of the world was doing – sitting in front of the television and waiting with baited breath for the Oscar’s to begin. Without a doubt, the 86th Academy Awards are bound to go down in history as one of the most eventful nights in cinema history.
There were some good moments – Ellen DeGeneres as a hilarious host who had us in splits all night; Pink’s spectacular musical performance which we are currently playing on loop; 12 Years a Slave starting the night with nine nominations and winning three; Benedict Cumberbatch photobombing U2 on the red carpet; and of course, Pharrell Williams dragging superstars like Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence et al into his dance performance. How fabulous is this GIF of Miss Streep and Pharrell’s dance off?!
And then there were some not-so-good moments – Jared Leto’s super awkward acceptance speech (“To all the dreamers out there around the world watching this tonight, in places like Ukraine and Venezuela, I want to say ‘we are here’” – um, what?); The Academy’s major blooper when they mixed up Salma Hayek with Penelope Cruz on Instagram (might be a good idea to double and triple check next time!); and Ellen accidentally calling Liza Minelli a man. At least, we hope it was an accident.
In our eyes, Miss DeGeneres was truly the star of the show. She made the hosting experience super fun and her witty jokes were spot-on. She was so hilarious, in fact, that by the end of the night, we were clutching our stomachs and had tears of laughter rolling down our cheeks. I mean, who hands out pizza slices at The Oscars and then proceeds to collect their moolah in Pharrell’s hat?! Only Ellen could pull it off. Our favourite DeGeneres quip of the night? “If you win tonight, I think we should bring you the Oscar.” That was directed at the beautiful Jennifer Lawrence who, as you will remember, tripped on her way up the stairs last year and managed a minor stumble on the red carpet this year as well. But what the lady lacks in steadiness, she makes up for with superb acting talent and an unmatched sense of humor. We love you, Jennifer!
The highlight was definitely Ellen’s seflie with all our favourite A-listers. Did you know that this snap outdid the president’s record for the most re-tweets? Last time we checked, the infamous photograph had been re-tweeted by two million people across the globe and the number was steadily growing. If you haven’t seen it yet, you must be living under a rock. It truly is the “best photo ever.”
Finally, if you haven’t done so already, get on YouTube and feast your eyes and ears on Pink’s jaw dropping rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from the iconic Wizard of Oz, which paid homage to the film on its 75th anniversary. Her performance was a nostalgic trip down memory lane (or the yellow brick road?) and we couldn’t be more thankful. As if her crooning wasn’t mind blowing enough, we were totally smitten by her stunning ruby red gown which made her look every bit the superstar.
It truly was a night to remember!
